Incident Overview: Square Service Disruption

PEO Defender members have raised concern about a service disruption that impacted popular online payments forum Square over the last 24 hours.

The company experienced a day-long outage starting on Thursday afternoon that left customers unable to process payments. As of Friday morning, September 8th, Square says its services are coming back online, and this has been confirmed by PEO Defender members.

On Thursday, Square announced that it was suffering from a “multiple services disruption” and “degraded performance.”

The company announced via its incident webpage that it was investigating a disruption with one of its data centers which was causing an impact on multiple Square services.

In the early morning hours of September 8th, the company announced, “As a result of the ongoing disruption affecting multiple Square services, we anticipate slight delays for some transfers on Friday, September 8th. However, we want to reassure all of our US sellers that you will receive your transfers by 12:00 PM, PDT on Friday, September 8th.”

An hour later, at 01:18 PDT, the company wrote on its incident blog, “Our engineering team has implemented a fix and services are beginning to recover.”

As of 06:42 PDT the company wrote:

We can now confirm that the disruption impacting Square services has been resolved.

Please be aware that sellers may encounter delays in the updating of certain product/services:

Offline Mode Payments: Payments are being uploaded, but there will be a slight delay before they appear as completed.

Any new Offline Mode Payments will be completed as normal in the coming hours.  

Square Reporting Tools: There is a possibility of delays in updating new billing and transaction information across all Square reporting tools, including those in all Square Point of Sale apps and the Dashboard.

Transfers: we anticipate slight delays for some transfers on Friday, September 8.

However, we want to reassure all our US sellers that you will receive your transfers by 12:00 PM, PDT on Friday, September 8.

What Happened?

The outage began around 12 pm PT on Thursday, September 7th, and left sellers unable to access accounts or process credit card payments.

It is not yet known how many customers were affected but Square says it serves millions of small and mid-sized businesses with physical and virtual point of sale services.

Cash App, a mobile payment service owned by Block, who also owns Square, experienced an outage as well on Thursday, leaving users unable to make or receive payments.

As of 7:49 PDT, the company wrote on its incident reporting website, about what it is calling “intermittent connection issues”, “We are continuing to resolve the outage, Our services are mostly back online. You may experience brief delays with certain services. If you experience a delay, there is no need to re-attempt.”
